All four stores stay open. Fondren and Maywood Mart will remain as McDade’s and Fortification and Westland Plaza will be branded “Froogel’s.”

In business since May 1980, community-owned Rainbow plans a fresh start, relocating elsewhere in Jackson before the beginning of 2019.

“We believe in what Jackson has to offer,” Erik Kegler says. “Jackson and Fondren are growing and being part of that community is important to us.”

Owner since 2006, Custom Optical’s Trish Hammons loves helping customers find the best pair of frames to match their individual style. 

The store is “a space to foster community, whether you want to sit at the bar, hang out on the front patio, or spend time in the cabana space out back.”

Chane has kicked off anniversary week at Swell-O-Phonic, marking “a 20-year experiment via multiple wrong turns trying to drive a straight line.”

While “Hidden History” goes out of its way to deny itself as comprehensive, the book is packed with Jackson history at moments fraught with consequence.
