Gloria’s Kitchen Opens on West Street
Fans of Gloria’s Kitchen will be glad to know they’re now found in Fondren.
Longtime soul food cook Gloria Bolls has opened “The Real Gloria’s Kitchen” at 3417 North West Street, once home to Charlie Mae’s BBQ.
Opened since September 24, the restaurant is not connected with the Baily Avenue location.
“We want to let everyone know my mother is in this area now and is no longer cooking at the other location,” says Anita Bolls, Gloria’s daughter and business manager. “As business partners, (my father and mother) have parted ways.”
Daily specials are offered in addition to the regular “meat and two” plate lunch – $8, tax included – with a roll or cornbread. Drinks are extra (with free refills in-house on tea and lemonade).
“When you think Gloria’s, you’re thinking good old home cooked food like your grandmother used to cook,” Anita says. “You’re thinking fried chicken, baked chicken, smothered chops, fried chops, turnip greens, collard greens, lima beans and peas. “Good eating,” she adds.
What is The Real Gloria’s Kitchen’s specialty? Anita quickly says, “Chicken tetrazzini.”
“It’s one of those things you think, ‘Oh I can cook that,’” she explains. “But there’s a special flavor to ours. We sell out every day.”
Gloria’s Kitchen started as New Victory Lunch where Gloria sold short orders. In 1994, the restaurant opened at 2855 Bailey Avenue. Many employees, like Gloria’s daughter, Tiffany Sylvester Kirkwood, have been with her for two decades.
Anita says customers “from way back” have discovered the new location.
“We’re known for a good atmosphere and good food, a place where you can relax and eat soul food and enjoy yourself. We hope to be here for a long time.”
The Real Gloria’s Kitchen is at 3417 North West Street and is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. — 5 p.m. Call in orders are welcome at (601) 397-6173.
