healthy decisions also involve being involved in community.

When I say I live a very healthy life, I am not just bragging on myself. I am actually bragging on the people and circumstances that surround me. It takes a community to provide the support and resources to stay healthy in today’s society, and by living in Fondren, I have set myself up to be healthy for many years to come.

The close proximity of our businesses to our housing communities lends itself to running errands on foot or by bike. I often times will walk to the bank, stroll to Sneaky Beans or Cups for a shot of espresso and then stop by McDade’s for groceries before I head home. Fondren’s streets, despite some unevenness and a few potholes here and there, are ideal for running and biking. Not only do they provide several miles of intertwined roadways and biking/running lanes but they offer something much more to someone that frequents them everyday: character and an ever-evolving landscape. If I need to exercise indoors, then I can choose one of the three yoga studios in the area or the Club Fitness Center and the Spa at St. Dominic’s, at our disposal for the gym experience or swimming.

Making the right decisions at the grocery register and the restaurant table are also important. The cornerstone of Fondren’s health movement is Rainbow Cooperative Grocery where you can buy everything from farm raised eggs to local produce to gluten free breads. And when I want a delicious vegan meal, I can pop in next door to High Noon Café for one of their lunch specials. And then there’s the bounty that is the original Farmer’s Market off West Street.

And speaking of restaurants, we have several options that offer “liveRIGHTnow” approved meals. In a week’s time, I might enjoy Sal & Mookie’s wheat crust pizza, Petra’s chickpea hummus or sushi from Fatsumo, just to name a few. The healthy meal options in Fondren are abundant thanks to an influx of new restaurants and the ingenuity of some of our oldies but goodies.

Being healthy feels great and I know I couldn’t do it without a neighborhood like Fondren!
